Compensation vs. Bribery

Before I became a mother, I was a wonderful parent, full of ideas of what I would do and, more importantly, never do. On the "never" list was bribery. My children would obey me out of respect and preservation of there back sides, not because the got something out of the deal. My children wouldn't ever be the ones laying in the aisle of Target screaming bloody murder.

Ahhh reality, sometimes such a bitter pill. With a few year of parenting under my belt, this is the conclusion I have came to: there is a difference between bribing and compensating or rewarding. Grown ups work for compensation. We have an agreed upon amount that we work for and know that if we fail to do our work, we cease getting compensated. Its called employment. We don't things simply because we want them or refuse to cooperate without them.

For children I believe the difference between the two is similar. I can say " I will be serving cookies to all children who have there toys put away by the time the timer dings" and I am compensating my children for a job well done. If I tell them to put away toys and they don't and then I start offering them things for obeying me, I am bribing and teaching them that my words are not enough to spur them on to action. On that note, here is a recipe for super easy cookies that take about 15 minutes from start to finish, just about the amount of time it takes to pick up toys.

1 cup peanut butter ( I like crunchy)
1 egg
1 cup sugar ( sometimes I do half brown and half white)
chocolate chips, it you want

Dump all ingredients into a bowl and mix. Scoop balls of cookie dough on to cookie sheet and slightly flatten with fork. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Serve to obedient children as reward for a job well done.

When I see small people screaming on the floor of Target, I like to think I see them with grace that only experience can bring. Sometimes, children are tired or hungry or just plain naughty and it doesn't change that fact that you need milk and bread from the store.

Working on my Domestic Goddess Badge

I looked at the to-do list I made last week and am happy to say I can cross off almost everything on it. It only took me 2 weeks. I think I either need smaller lists or more time. Here is what I have been up to: -I have made 2 loaves of banana oat bread, 1 batch of blackberry strawberry freezer jam, 1 loaf of gluten free bread. -From 12 juiced grapefruit I made grapefruit curd and a pan of grapefruit bars. -My garden is almost completely done, including a upgrade in size. I am growing tomatoes, onions, peppers, potatoes , cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower , herbs, lettuce, spinach , green beans, snap peas, cucumbers, and kohlrabi. -I hung herbs to dry -I have folded massive amounts of laundry...with more yet to do. All washed with my homemade laundry soap. -I recovered the "green monster" which is another post entirely. -I added a sitting area in my bedroom, where I am currently sitting, so that my laptop has a home other than the kitchen table. - I got a new dining room table a...

Blogging

So I have lost the love of blogging. I have always believed it is a narcissistic pass time, yet enjoy it anyway. I have found I easily spend entirely too much time tied to my computer. By the time I check Facebook , e-mail, friends blogs, etc I can easily waste an hour, if not two, of time. A friend of mine just blogged about the same thing. Yes, I get the irony of a blog post about not blog posting, but alas, here it is: I just read a good friends blog about my blog. A great leader here in Boulder, Kevin Colon wrote this: “Hugh moved to Denver to do a training deal for an organization and he ended up starting a church. His blogging is not incredibly frequent but when he does blog….it’s good!” Now, while I’m humbled that a man like Kevin would even want to read my blog, I figured it was a good time to state once and for all why I only post once or twice a month. Simply this……..”I prefer to spend my time with people.” I’ ve always wondered how people have time to read blogs, let alo...

Toddler Safety

Some days I am a energetic, creative, wonderful mommy. Most days, I am operating on 5 hours or less sleep with a husband who is out of town. For Elie's own safety, this week I was prepared with ideas of fun things to do. I thought I might share these for those of you who also have toddlers in danger of driving you crazy. Stuffed animal games : Make a train - Get a large sheet out and load it up with all the stuffed animals. Take them for a ride seeing how fast you can go without them all falling off. Sorting - Sort all animals by size, color, or animal type. Hide and seek - Kid waits in room while mama hides animal around house. Kid hunts them out. Birthday party - Pull out the hats and throw a birthday bash for all the animals. Basket ball - Put out a laundry basket and shoot hoops using the animals as balls. Crafts : Tear and glue - Grab a glue stick and tear up tissue paper to glue down to a sheet of paper. Toy prints - Use paint and a few toys or tp rolls. Dip toys in paint and...
